CHECKLIST FOR CLERGY

Determine the individual’s needs.

Review the table Indicators of Mental Illness on page 7. Look for signs from this table that the individual may have. If the individual has one or more signs proceed to the next step. If the behavior is life threatening immediately call local authorities.

Decide on clergy’s role.

Decide on the level of involvement clergy will have. Caregivers may be assigned to assist the clergy in proceeding through the Guidebook steps. Whenever possible a capable family member should be the primary caregiver. A member of the congregation or family friend can also be a caregiver. Monitor caregivers progress by using the following checklist. If the clergy is going to be the only caregiver the checklist can be adapted for personal use.
